Harlequins star James Chisholm visited us on 10th October 19  to mark another generous donation from Fairfax ‘Building Young Futures’.

Farney Close School was delighted to benefit from new machinery, including a new garage scissor lift for the car maintenance workshop whilst the Food Technology department were thrilled to have all their ingredient costs met for the second academic year in succession.

J. Thompson (mechanics instructor), V. Owens (food technology teacher) and S. Deane (Chair) are pictured with James who captained Harlequins last season and is well on the way to completing 100 appearances for the club. As an ambassador, he was warmly welcomed to the school and enjoyed a cup of tea with some freshly cooked cake served by some of our young people.

Thank you to Fairfax, “Building Young Futures”, a framed copy of the picture can be found in the entrance of the Vocational Unit.

Welcome Back

We hope you have all had a fun summer and are rested for the term ahead. Staff have been engaged in training for 3 days, are prepped and ready for the year ahead and looking forward to welcoming students back to Farney Close on Monday.

Anybody who is anybody……

What a brilliant end to the term for all of us. The school production of Bugsy Malone was an absolute treat. Students had worked so very hard, ably led by Eimaer, supported by Vickie, Sue and a number of other staff. Our set and props elves in the form of Chris and Gerrard did an incredible job of transforming the stage a making another car to add to the Farney Fleet. Our students performed exceptionally well and it was hugely rewarding for staff to receive such positive feedback from families about the fact that for some pupils this was the first time they have felt able to be part of a performance. Our heartfelt thanks, goes to all of the pupils and staff who worked so very hard to bring together a performance that will be the benchmark for us going forward. Well done everyone!

Work Experience Week

Our year 10 pupils have had their first experience of the work place this week and have undertaken their work experience placements. Some pupils did their experience close to home and some from school as a base. Feedback from employers was generally very positive about our young people and the progress they made as part of a proper work force. We are always impressed by just how mature some of our pupils can be when they are in a workplace and a number have received glowing references as a result. Our pupils have made a booklet of their placements which will be available to visitors soon.

Activity Week – What a Blast!!

Well another activity week has come and gone at Farney Close this week. All students in the School are offered a plethora of activities on and off site to enjoy. This year’s offer ranged from Off-site activities like camping, climbing, museum visits, birds of prey centres, to activity parks and a range of on-site activities including movie making. Students were enthusiastic, responsible and great ambassadors for Farney Close School and feedback from our events and their experiences were overwhelmingly positive. Activity week is always a tiring but rewarding time and our thanks goes out to all of the staff that put in so much hard work to make it happen.

Have a Great Summer!

We at Farney Close, would like to wish all of our students, staff and their families a wonderful summer. We have a number of staff working through the holidays and are very grateful for their efforts to get us ‘ship shape’ for the new academic year, but hope they get a little rest and sunshine too. May we take this opportunity to thank you and all of our strategic partners for your support during the year and in the year to come. We look forward to welcoming you back to Farney Close soon.

Exam Season Begins

It is hard to believe we are at exam season already. We have a number of pupils who have been studying vocational courses who have been compiling some evidence over the year. All pupils completing the GCSE courses in subjects will now have exams and have been supported by staff to prepare for them. Exams are stressful times for everyone, so please talk to us if your young person is struggling. All students that need adjustments such as a scribe or additional time have been properly registered and we hope this maximises their potential to show their very best. In the mean time our recommendations for everyone this exam season is, get lots of sleep, drink lots of water and eat a balanced diet with lots of fruit and veg that helps keep us all functioning at our best.

Staff Changes at Farney Close

We are delighted to announce that Steve De Souza, who has been a long standing member of our care team, has recently been appointed to the role of Head of Care. Steve has a wealth of experience at Farney Close and an eye for detail. We really look forward to seeing our care provision move from strength to strength under Steve’s leadership.

In addition, the governing body have recently made the decision to add a Vice-Principal role into our leadership structure, to help with our capacity to drive our vision for the school forward even further. Due to this being a recent decision we have appointed Emily Hopkins-Hayes as an Interim Vice-Principal to work with us in the short term, in order to allow us to run a full round of recruitment in the autumn term. We expect to have our permanent Vice Principal in post from January 2020 and will keep up to date. Emily said “I am really excited to be supporting the team and young people at Farney Close School and look forward to some hard but rewarding work ahead.”

Sara Hack - Principal

sara I am proud and honoured to have been appointed as Principal at Farney Close School, as of the Summer term 2019. I move into this position having been Head of Care since 1998 and Acting Head since September 2018.

I am a registered Social Worker and take on the role of Principal with 37 years’ experience of working with young people experiencing Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties (SEMH), in a school setting.

I am completely dedicated to Farney Close and the young people that attend our school. I look forward to working with a hugely committed staff team to ensure that Farney Close continues to provide high levels of academic and social education, with each young person having the opportunity and support to be able to achieve their potential.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Dear Parents/Carers,

I thought I would take this opportunity to announce that as of now we are now running the Duke of Edinburgh award at Farney Close School. This is a completely new experience for the young people that we work with. The award has 3 awards Bronze, Silver & Gold and is open to pupils from year nine upwards. We currently have five young people enrolled in the award for this academic year and will be looking to expand on this from September. We have also been very fortunate that the Duke of Edinburgh award have granted us a start-up fund which has been greatly appreciated and gives us the ability to purchase some much needed outdoor equipment relevant to the award. We look forward to sharing the successes of the young people that attend Farney Close in the near future.
